Follow in Darwins footsteps with the iNaturalist mobile app

Editors Note: Today guest author i Dr . Scott Loarie , a fellow at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford and co-director of iNaturalist . org , a biodiversity citizen-science website . Pepperwood Preserve was the recipient of a Google Earth Outreach Developer Grant , funded through the Google Inc . Charitable Giving Fund at the Tide Foundation . Were excited to share how the iNaturalist Android application developed as a result of this grant is being used in action at Pepperwood Preserve . Last weekend , as I rolled back a piece of bark at Pepperwood Preserve to reveal a big black beetle , I was reminded of a great story about Charle Darwin . Out collecting beetles , Darwin already had a beetle in each hand when he spotted a third . To free up a hand , he popped one of the beetle in his mouth . No sooner had he done this when it excreted some sort of burning liquid onto his tongue forcing

Today , were happy to announce the availability of 3D imagery for Google Earth on the new iPad , iPad 2 and iPhone 4S . A map must be comprehensive and accurate no matter where you are or what device you use . We also believe maps can be useful in ways you might not have imagined . With todays release of Google Earth for iOS you can literally fly through breathtaking 3D city landscapes and images and follow virtual tours of places youve never been -- all with a sincero swipe of your fingertip . Its a new , and I think magical way to explore the world in which we live . The growing list of 3D cities include Boulder , Boston , Charlotte , Lawrence ( Kan . ) , Long Beach ( Ca . ) , Los Angeles , Portland ( Ore . ) , San Diego , Santa Cruz , Tampa , Tucson , and the San Francisco Bay Area ( including the Peninsula and East Bay ) as well as Rome , Italy . Well keep building and releasing 3D imagery for new locations as fast

One year , three highlights: Google for Nonprofits looks back

Imagine ending homelessness , solving climate change , or guaranteeing a sustainable future for the world . Nonprofits work hard to make these goals a reality . They tackle the most urgent issues facing society , and Google products help make their missions more visible and far-reaching . Lets look at three ways the nonprofit community thrived in 2019 with the support of Google for Nonprofits and partner teams . 1 . Staying in the knowFollowers of Google for Nonprofits monthly newsletters and livestreams enjoyed a steady stream of news and tips about Google products . They learned how to spread their messages on YouTube , how to make a bigger impact with Google Earth and Maps , and gained insights from Google Analytics . Nonprofits also learned from each other . It easy to take for granted how much information about the world is now available at our fingertips . But it wasnt long ago that traveling to a new place meant fumbling through sheet of turn-by-turn instructions while trying to keep one hand on the steering wheel , with no way to anticipate how bad traffic would be or find a restaurant along the way . It was around that time , 15 years ago , that Google Maps set out on an audaciou goal to map the world . I remember seeing early versions of Google Maps and being amazed at how easily you could scroll , zoom and search the world . One of my earliest memorie of working on Google Maps wa a a member of our user experience team , which designs and improves the usability of our products . In a world before smartphones , one of the biggest question that we agonized over was where to put the Print button on the page so that people could easily take the

Finding belonging in Googles Aboriginal and Indigenous Network

In 2013 , the Google Earth Outreach team reached out to me with a request . They had been invited to partner on a mapping project in western Canada , and were looking for a Googler who could contribute an Indigenous perspective on cultural protocol . They asked if I would be interested in helping . Absolutely! was my immediate response . Im Kanienkehá ka , ( Mohawk ) and there have been times in my life and my workplace where it felt like there wasnt space for me to be Indigenous . This was a great opportunity to lean in . There was also pressure: I could bring my perspective from my community but Indigenous communities are incredibly diverse . I hoped my Indigenous Studies degree would help me . But the experience was a success and led to more participation in projects in the Indigenous space at Google . Since 2015 , Ive been one of the five people who lead Googles Aboriginal and Indigenous Network ( GA
